“Under the paved city, the sea”. An excavation in the story repositories of the urban subsoil and of the bodies as archives taking place in a “stoa” of the Athenian city centre where past and future miraculously meet.

With deep roots in history and art, dancer and choreographer Despina Sanida Krezia is inspired by visual installations to create a work about what escapes the frame. Down to Under is an excavation into the repositories of stories hidden in the urban underground and in the archives of bodies; a plunge into the basement of an Athenian stoa where past meets the future. A little revolutionary movement reminiscent of the May ’68 slogan “beneath the pavement, the beach”.

“Down to Under is a multimedia installation and performance which investigates, in the basement of an athenian stoa, the city’s effect on human bodies. Through the prism of video gaming and internet culture, the city is seen as an algorithm, a playground, a battleground as well as a confinement. Βodies explore their various possible physicalities and arrangements within the limitations imposed by their environment, while also breaking through and creating new potential ways of appropriating the city through punk intimacy, spontaneity and imagination. The performers work through physical states and tasks inspired by the urban and underground culture, exposing their effort in an ever-shifting habitat.”

Despina Sanida Krezia was born in 1998 in Athens. She graduated from the State School of Orchestral Art and the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Athens. As a performer she has collaborated with many artists from Greece and abroad, and she is also a member of VIGIL artistic duo. Down to Under is her third choreographic work. She has interned at the National Library of Greece.
