Biting back Symposium

Η Χριστιάνα Γαλανοπούλου προσκλήθηκε ως μια από τους βασικούς ομιλητές (keynote speaker) στο Συμπόσιο με θέμα “Biting Back: Creativity and collaboration in times of austerity”. Το Συμπόσιο πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Birmingham στις 21 Μαρτίου 2011 και διοργανώθηκε από τον τομέα τεχνών του Συμβουλίου του Birmingham, το Κέντρο Τεχνών mac και το κέντρο για την προώθηση των Νοτιοασιατικών Τεχνών Sampad. Όπως φαίνεται και στο τέλος του video, η πολιτιστική ανατροπή ξεκίνησε στο Birmingham…

Christiana Galanopoulou was invited as a keynote speaker at the Biting Back Symposium – “Biting Back: Creativity and collaboration in times of austerity” – held in Birmingham on March 21, 2011. The Symposium was organised by Birmingham City Council, mac arts centre and Sampad development agency for South Asian arts. As one can see at the end of the video, cultural turnabout started in Birmingham…

Ημέρα 10η/ Day 10. 18.10.2010

Το μεσημέρι το περνάμε στην Πλατεία Εξαρχείων όπου οι Yelp αλληλεπιδρούν με το κοινό στο everybodies της Μαριέλας Νέστορα. Περαστικοί, φίλοι, μόνιμοι θαμώνες της πλατείας. Οι οδηγίες που τους δίνονται μέσω MP3 είναι διαφορετικές για τον καθένα τους, που νομίζει ότι ζει μια μοναχική εμπειρία. Όμως, μαγικά, τελικά βρίσκονται όλοι μαζί να συμμετέχουν σε μια χορογραφία που τους συνδέει με τους άλλους και με το περιβάλλον. Οι περισσότεροι, ακόμα κι όσοι μπήκαν με αμφιβολίες, λένε ότι η εμπειρία ήταν αξέχαστη.

We spent our afternoon at Exarchia Square, where Yelp interact with the public during the interactive performance everybodies by Mariela Nestora. The participants are passers-by, friends of the festival, people who spend their time at the square. The instructions they receiv through MP3 give them the impression that they are alone in this experience. But finally, in a magic way, they altogether get involved in a choreography which connects them with other participants and with the environment. Most of them say this was a unique, unforgettable experience.

Το απόγευμα, όπως είχαμε συμφωνήσει, το φεστιβάλ κλείενι με εγκαίνια στη Γκαλερί Qbox: Panorama_Harbourg, των ZimmerFrei.

Later in the afternoon an opening closes the festival, as promised: Panorama_Harbour, by ZimmerFrei, at Qbox Gallery.

Το βράδυ στο About: o Κώστας Τσιούκας αφήνει πίσω του το χάος, μετά από την τρυφερή σάτιρα του MIR.

In the evening, Kostas Tsioukas leaves his little loving mess behind, after MIRfestival’s sweet satire.

Και τέλος, η δεύτερη εκδοχή της περφόρμανς Presbyacusis 2 2 20000 Hz των Repulsive Society στο About: ανοίγει το πεδίο των ακουσμάτων μας σε άλλες διαστάσεις.

Finally the second version of Presbyacusis 2 2 20000 Hz by Repulsive Society at About: opens our ears and our minds to unknown dimensions.

Πρωί.

Εδώ/τώρα μέσα στην πόλη.

Όλοι στο πόδι για τα Συμβάντα 2010 του Δημήτρη Αληθεινού. 11:30 ξεκινάμε από τον Άγιο Διονύσιο στη Σκουφά. Η μέρα είναι πιο ζεστή απ’ όσο είχαμε φανταστεί. Η Μαργαρίτα Παπάζογλου είναι η πρώτη περφόρμερ που “κατακρύβεται” από τον Αληθεινό.

Morning.

Here/now in the city.

All of us in MIRfestival stand by for Happenings 2010 by Dimitris Alithinos. We start at 11:30 outside Saint Dionysios at Skoufa st. It is a really hot day. The first performer to be “concealed” by Alithinos is Marguerite Papazoglou.

Στο Κολωνάκι δημιουργείται μεγάλη αναστάτωση. / Kolonaki gets upside down by the performance.

Η Μαργαρίτα τελικά βγαίνει γελαστή, όπως και οι εργάτες που φαίνεται να το διασκεδάζουν./

Marguerite gets out smiling, like the workers who seem to be having fun.

Κατά τη μία είμαστε στη Σταδίου. Ο Γιώργος Αβραμόπουλος είναι ο δεύτερος περφόρμερ που “κατακρύβεται”.

At around 13:00 we are at Stadiou st.George Avramopoulos is the second performer to be “concealed”.

Ο κόσμος ανταλλάσσει απόψεις. Κάποιοι αναστατώνονται, κάποιοι επικροτούν.

People exchange views. Some are disturbed, others praise the work.

Άλλοι αδιαφορούν.

Others pass indifferently.

Άλλοι είναι σκεπτικοί. Τι να σκέφτονται άραγε αυτοί οι μετανάστες;

Others think deeply. What could those immigrants think?

Η αστυνομία έρχεται κάθε λίγο σε όλες τις θέσεις και ζητάει τις άδειες. Μετά από κάθε έλεγχο φεύγει, αλλά σε λίγο εμφανίζεται άλλο σώμα.

Policemen ask for our licenses every ten minutes. They check, and then go. But some others come to replace them.

Μετά από αρκετή ώρα, το συνεργείο βγάζει το Γιώργο υπό το θερμό χειροκρότημα των παρευρισκομένων.

A while later, George is taken out by the team of the workers under a big applause.

Μέσα σε λίγα λεπτά εξαφανίζεται κάθε σημάδι της περφόρμανς.

In a few minutes there is nothing left of the performance.

3 το μεσημέρι στην Αθηνάς, στη Λαχαναγορά. Ο ήλιος και το παβέ καίνε. Ο Αληθεινός αποφαζίσει να κατακρύψει δύο περφόρμερ στο ίδιο σημείο. Είναι η Μαργαρίτα και ο Diego που κατάγεται από το Περού.

3 in the afternoon at Athinas street, at the vegetable market. The sun is burning the stones. Alithinos decides to conceal two performers at the same spot. It is Marguérite and Diego who comes from Peru.

Η διαδικασία είναι πιο δύσκολη και καρατά αρκετή ώρα. Περαστικοί, κυρίως ξένοι, έχουν μαζευτεί έξω από το παραπέτασμα και ασκούν τρομακτική πίεση για να δουν τι συμβαίνει.

The process of the concealment is demanding and it lasts more than at the other sites. Immigrant passers-by ask tremendous pressure to get to see what is happening inside the curtains.

Το έργο αποκαλύπτεται. Τα σχόλια δεν περιγράφονται.

The work is unveiled. One could never transcribe the comments.

Ο ήλιος καίει. Ο Γιώργος κάνει μασάζ στο εκτεθειμένο χέρι του Diego.

The sun is burning. George massages Diego’s exposed hand.

Λίγα λεπτά πριν το τέλος, επαναλαμβάνεται η σκηνή της αστυνομίας.

A few minutes before the end, policemen appear once again.

Η Μαργαρίτα και ο Diego επιτέλους εκτός φούρνου…

Και ο Δημήτρης Αληθεινός είναι ευχαριστημένος από το έργο…

Αργότερα το απόγευμα τρέχουμε να ετοιμάσουμε το live των Repulsive Society στο Πάρκο Ελευθερίας.

A little later in the afternoon we rush to prepare Repulsive Society’s live performance at Parko Eleftherias.

O Yann και ο Kevin στήνουν υπό το βλέμμα των πιτσιρικάδων./ Yann and Kevin set up. Children watch.

Καθώς πέφτει το σκοτάδι ο Yann  έχει αρχίσει να παίζει περικυκλωμένος από σκιές – θεατές. Μαζί κι ο Βενιζέλος.

As the night falls, Yann starts playing surrounded by shadow-listeners. Eleftherios Venizelos is one of them.

Αργότερα στο About:, κάνουν είσοδο θριαμβευτών.

Later on, at About:, they make an entrance.

Στο About: κάνει πρεμιέρα ο Κώστας Τσιούκας, με το Λευκό πάτωμα πάνω από το έδαφος. Ένας Τσιούκας ποιμένας, μεταμορφώνεται μπροστά στα μάτια μας σε σάτυρο.

At About: Kostas Tsioukas premieres his White floor over the ground. A shepherd transforms into a faun in front of our eyes.

Στο τέλος της μακριάς μέρας ο Sébastien Roux παίζει μουσική με φόντο την ποιητική ταινία του Κurt d’Haeseleer.

At the end of this long day, Sébastien Roux imporvises a concert on the poetic film by Kurt d’Haeseleer.

Ημέρα 6η/ Day 6. 14.09.2010

H παρουσία της Anushiye Yarnell γίνεται αφορμή για μια περιήγηση στη γειτονιά. Καθώς ταξιδεύουμε σε άλλες εποχές, βρισκόμαστε τελικά να κοιτάμε το Μοναστηράκι από ψηλά.

Anushiye Yarnell’s presence leads us to a long walk through ages and traces in Monastiraki. We end up looking at our neighbourhood from above.

Η απεργία των οδηγών φορτηγών δημιουργεί μια τεράστια αναστάτωση στην αναχώρηση του σκηνικού της παράστασης Hauts Cris (miniatures). Στις 14 Σεπτεμβρίου καταφέρνουμε να φορτώσουμε τα φορτηγά, αλλά κανείς δεν ξέρει πότε θα φύγουν.

The truck drivers’ strike creates problems in shipping back the set of the Hauts Cris (miniatures) performance. On September 14 we manage to get the set in a truck on Monday, but we do not know when it is going to be back to France.
