VINCENT DUPONT
Hauts Cris (miniature)

Choreography and performer: Vincent Dupont | Sound: Thierry Balasse | Lighting: Yves Godin | Technical manager: Bastien Anconina | Artistic Assistant: Myriam Lebreton | Set design: Boris Jean | Voice treatment: Valérie Joly | Ending text: Agrippa d’Aubigné
Production: Association J’y pense souvent (…)

Hauts Cris (miniature) by French Vincent Dupont, is an exciting performance combining choreographic movement, sound and live media.
In Hauts Cris (miniature), a character goes through a series of inner situations which are related to the cry. Setting it free from the depths of the unconscious, Dupont turns it into a work of art, into an enigmatic visual composition resembling a medieval miniature. The use of the interchange between different scales of the space and the use of sound combined with the strange things happening creates an atmosphere which reminds us of films by David Lynch.
Primed in 2007 with the “young choreographic talent” by SACD, Vincent Dupont has formed an absolutely personal style which is defined by the use of movement and his own voice, as well as by the constant interaction between the space, the body and the sound. In Hauts Cris (miniature) the sensors covering the set feed with the sound of his voice the computer generated sound of the performance but also the changes of the light. Experienced sound artist Thierry Balasse and one of the most important lighting designers in France, Yves Godin, support the performer adding live to the outcome of the performance.

ANE LAN
Dream Chamber

Director: Ane Lan | Performers: Karstein Solli, Birgitte Bjørsvik, Ane Lan | Costume design: Elisabeth Nøkland Johansen | Stage design: Ane Lan | Music: Ane Lan | Lyrics: Ane Lan, Karstein Solli, Birgitte Bjørsvik | Production Photography: Jan Tore Jensen | Producer: Inger Lena Gaasemyr | Video concept, script, set design, & camera: Ane Lan | Video Costumes & Styling: Elisabeth Nøkland Johansen
Production: Ane Lan company
With support from: The Norwegian Arts Council / The Foundation Lyd og Bilde / The Foundation Billedkunstnernes Vederlagsfond / The City Hall Oslo

The Performance works conceived by the Norwegian Ane Lan, are based on living portraits, short performances that interpret the domestic and personal condition of History; the interior life of common men that, being out of proportion with the universal dimension, rests in painful resignation. Dream Chamber is an exception. “To whom will you reveal your true self?” Freud asks the woman on his couch in this multimedia performance exposing how strange and dark dreams are, but also how much they reveal about the world we have created. Like in a dream, humorously and with a certain eccentricity, Ane Lan and his two accomplices pose the questions, but never give an answer. Just like dreams. Do moving pictures from all around us haunt our dreams? What are the social neurosis symptoms?

ANUSHIYE YARNELL
BEAR

Concept, choreography, performance: Anushiye Yarnell | Music: DAVIDE | Lighting: Anushiye Yarnell Production: Anushiye Yarnell
With the support of: British Council | TUPAC Lima Peru | Chapter Arts Centre

British Anushiye Yarnell studied fine arts, and dance. Her exploration of movement developed through a continuing relationship to butoh dance. Then she did a postgraduate degree in performance writing. From then on she focused mainly on making solo works, which evolve though different phases and environments the work being shaped developed and transformed, though site specific projects. Anushiye's work exists as a dialogue of movement between choreographic and improvisational languages of expression, where the body invites us to inhabit a world connected to both the perceived reality of our physical existence, and to the fantasies projected by our imaginations. With BEAR she leads us to a world of memories and premonitions, to a world without guilt, in the condition od absolute love a child or an animal can experience. Like “a stray humanimal” she wears herself inside out to reveal this magic relationship with the animal, this “elsewhere” people seem to forget

Riot
audiovisual performace, 4min, 2010
Sounds, Performance & Motion Trigger: Lambros Pigounis (http://www.virb.com/kinesphere) | Video: Matthias Fritsch

The three new performances initiated by German Video Artist Matthias Fritsch (http://subrealic.net) are the result of a collaborative transformation process. Lyrical videos of his have been proposed to other artists, performers and musicians as territories of intervention and interpretation. Image awaits to be accompanied by movement and sound to change and become anew. The origin of authorship starts blurring and is readdressed though interchanges, and co-creation. With a reference to the tradition of silent cinema, in which silent images were joined by live performing musicians, these new performances aim to create a poetic atmosphere between cinema and live event.
Dance Piece No.2 is a poetic live performance by the dancer Agni Papadeli Rossetou who is placed into a surrounding of natural but artificial environments. Her movements are tracked by sensors placed in the costume designed by En Vit Ekorre to create and manipulate the sound atmosphere of the piece which is generated by CotiK and NatryX.
For Landscape No.3 the sonic artist NatryX and her collaborators ACTE VIDE are invited to interpret a scrolling landscape video and read it as a graphical music score.
In Riot, Soundartist Lambros Pigounis interacts with the projection of Matthias Fritsch's video showing rioting juveniles from December 2009 in Athens. Pigounis is using motion triggering hardware to create the soundtrack for the video. The clip "Riot" is part of the wider collaborative art project "Music from the Masses" (http://subrealic.net/mftm/ )

CHRISTINA VASSILIOU & EDY FERGUSON Now+here= NOWHERE

Concept, choreography, performance: Christina Vassiliou | Video: Edy Ferguson
Production: Christina Vassiliou

Christina Vassiliou, a young choreographer exploring dreams and the realm of the imaginary, will collaborate on this project with video-artist Edy Ferguson. Now+here= NOWHERE is a performance turning upside down MIRfestival’s proposal to artists to work on the subject HERE/NOW. Christina Vassiliou proposes a performance-installation «about the quest for a personal Eden, a selected homecountry, a better ‘tomorrow’ turning into ‘today’». HERE/NOW becomes a desirable elsewhere, a dreamlike reality we deserve to live in.

ANDONIS P & ANDRIANA TOOT
1, 1, 2, 3,...

Music: Andonis P + Andriana ΤοοΤ | Video: Georgia M. Touliatou

The new work by Andonis P (known from the period he was a member of Stereo Nova) and Andriana Toot, who both studied computer composition, is in dialogue with a video by visual artist Georgia Touliatou. It is an attempt to make tangible “movement” of sound and all its possible dimensions. The result is a composition sometimes analysing – or decomposing – sound and sometimes coming out of its complicated perplexions.

Andriana Touliatou and Andonis Palaskas aka Andonis P and Andriana Toot, started their collaboration as Supermarket in 1999. Soon after that, their interest focused on Electroacoustic Composition, both in theory and in practice. They havs composed music for short films, video installations and animation. An important part of their work is composing music and live performing in contemporary dance performances. Their most recent collaborations are with Griffon, Lemurius, Landscape and Motel Griffon dance companies. Compositions by them have participated in festivals in Greece and abroad.

BIOMASS

Biomass started as a dj in Italy (Napoli) in 1996 during his studies, playing in clubs, squats, autonomous spaces. In 2003 he started the elaboration of a repetitive minimal music-plan detouring sounds and visuals into his private audio video structures. Post industrial reconstructions of blues and jazz atmospheres in accordance with the needs of the power of an imaginist living in the era of the melodic-vision destruction by an urban electric environment. In 2007 he moved to Athens. His live performances consist of a mix of analog and digital instruments accompanied by video recuts created by the artist. In MIRfestival Biomass will present a live performance based on sound and visual material collected during the Iraq war.

SEBASTIEN ROUX
live «listening only» / Séance d'écoute

French Sébastien Roux, who works at IRCAM as an assistant of Georges Aperghis and Gérard Pesson, and has had many artistic collaborations with artists form the sound and from the performance fields, will present a live set of «exclusive listening process». During those sets he presents since 2005 and defines as «sound porjections» he proposes his compositions to his audiences in conditions which favorise the absolute devotion to the sense of listening, adapted to the specific venue and time. These conditions include darkness and comfortable seating.

REPULSIVE SOCIETY
Presbyacusis 2 2 20.000 Hz

Repulive Society is a collective translating the security aesthetics and philosophy into the art field. They believe that recently –especially since 9/11– the security field has actively participated to the mutations of the society, to the sociopolitical discussion – on the international geopolitical level as well as on the internal context – and to the philosophical debates. This field has been very creative and effective. Presbyacusis 2 2 20.000 Hz is a sound performance using the security sonic frequencies panel, used in devices such as Mosquito™, Mind Molester, Brown Noise, LRAD… The performance is searching the threshold of the human ear, in order to find the specific non-listenable frequency that can make the listener feel uncomfortable. The performance has been hosted in Malaupixel festival and during Le Nouveau Festival at Centre Pompidou in Paris, 2009, NK in Berlin and Empreintes Numériques in Toulouse, in 2010.

HERE? NOW?

An exhibition of works by
Panayiota Apostolopoulou, Kyriaki Goni, Manolis Iliakis, Dimitris Papoutsakis, Io Myrto Haviara and Gerald Zahn

Athens of daydreaming. Athens like a model, like a kid’s toy. Athens of the routine. A familiar Athens. Athens of friendship, of cruelty, of violence and of inprisonment, Athens of the escape, of the rescue, of the dream and of the miracle. An Athens of desires being paid off in dosages, like a loan. This exhibition is the best introduction to the HERE/ NOW project of MIRfestival.

Tribute: DIMITRIS ALITHINOS
Homage to Mantegna

Dimitris Alithinos is one of the artists who in the 1960s and 1970s shaped a scene of contemporary Greek art which was searching new expression territories in abolishing boundaries between arts and in using the artist’s body as an ultimate means of expression of visual arts. Inevitably they ended up experimenting with the body and the new audiovisual media. Alithinos is one of the few artists who have been in a constant quest of renewal of their artistic language and in a constant dialogue between «here» and «elsewhere».

The tribute to Dimitris Alithinos has two parts:
On September 11, 12 and 13 at Qbox Gallery we will present the installation Homage to Mantegna. This work was created for the 1980 Paris Biennial and was only presented once the same year at Desmos Gallery. It has never been presented after that, so it is a rare opportunity to see a work which was only seen once but had a tremendous impact in the evolutions of the use of body and new media in contemporary Greek art. Fragile as it is, using 16mm screenings, it will only be presented for 3 days. On a sketch of Mantegna’s St Sebastian, Alithinos projects his own torso, which through a ritual depicted on the film, finally assumes its female nature. At the same time the feet projection is a metaphor for the resurrection of the saint.
The second part of the tribute, HAPPENINGS 2010 will be created especially for the HERE/NOW project of MIRfestival and it will be shown in public spaces of Athens centre in the afternoon of Friday September 17 (see HERE/NOW project)

Qbox Gallery 11, 12 & 13/ 09, 18:30-21:30

Tribute:
THANASIS RENTZIS

Corpus και Fiction

Thanassis Rentzis contributed to the renovation of Greek contemporary cinema language following a path of research and visual perception and opening the door to new challenging evolutions. MIRfestival pays a tribute to Thanassis Rentzis, screening his films Corpus (1979) and Fiction (1976).

exile room 13/09, 16/09 19:00-21:00

HERE/NOW

Part of MIRfestival programme comes from international artists and collectives proposals submitted after the festival’s open call.

Although the festival is not thematic, especially for the 2010 edition it was proposed to the artists to submit works for the public space in Athens under the title HERE/NOW. The idea was that artistic testimony on reality would produce thought – which is part of MIRfestival’s goals. It was, however, proposed as a simple title, not imposing a certain direction and leaving artists to decide whether they will subverse it, interpret it, mis-interpret it, or lead it to unknown paths. The experiment was absolutely successful: the different interpretations of the subject were as many as the proposals.

Some of the projects selected will be presented as site-specific events in the festival venuesm (now+here=nowhere by Christina Vassiliou, Matthias Fritsch’s projects), and some will be exhibited in the Here? Now? exhibition opening the festival at About: (the works by Manolis Iliakis, Io Myrto Haviara, Dimitris Papoutsakis and Panayiota Apostolopoulou).

But according to the initial plan, the following projects will be presented in public spaces in Athens.

DIMITRIS ALITHINOS
HAPPENINGS 2010

HAPPENINGS 2010 is the new work by Dimitris Alithinos will be presented in 6 public spaces in the centre of Athens in the afternoon of Friday, September 17. Dimitris Alithinos did not participate at the submission procedure, but he had the idea for this work during the discussions about the tribute to him the festival was organising. Alithinos rises a mirror to the cruel side of the city and its inhabitants through a metaphor, a “clin d’oeil” to his 1973 work A HAPPENING, presented at the ORA Gallery and having a long lasting impact in the Greek contemporary art reality. Earth and soil, important element of Dimitris Alithinos’ work during the past years, like in Concealments, will be connected here to the other elements returning in his work, like human body and ritual.

6 public spaces in Athens city centre, Friday 17/09, 13:00-17:00

Choreography: Μαριέλα Νέστορα | Performers: audience, passers by

MIRfestival’s friends who will come on Saturday 18/09 at Exarchia square, between 14:00 and 19:00, as well as passers by, will have the opportunity to participate in a choreography for which each one will receive pre-recorded instructions. Co-existence in the choreography with the other “dancers” will reveal the lack of communication in this city, how difficult it is to think as “we” and not as “I”, but also how much pleasure this can create.
